Full hybrid

A full hybrid is not plugged in. It takes its saving from what a combustion car otherwise throws away as heat — braking energy — and gives it back when pulling away. Everything else follows from that, and very directly: it saves where you brake and pull away often, and almost nothing on a steadily flowing motorway. Drive mostly cross-country and you are buying technology and weight that never pay back over your route. Drive in town or on winding roads and you are buying the most economical drivetrain that needs no charging infrastructure at all.

What matters

  • The saving accrues per braking event, not per kilometre. You can estimate that in advance: the more decelerations your typical route contains, the larger the advantage. A run past twenty sets of lights delivers more than one twice as long with none at all.
  • Because the electric motor does most of the decelerating, the friction brakes rarely work — and seize up as a result. On a used hybrid the discs, calipers and slide pins are therefore compulsory checks; a stuck caliper is commoner here than a worn disc.
  • The high-voltage battery is small and is run in a narrow charge window, never fully charged and never fully empty. It therefore ages more slowly than a large traction battery cycled hard every day. Have the warranty terms shown to you anyway, and have the system read out at a garage — the cell voltages tell you more than any assurance.
  • On many hybrids the small 12-volt battery is the commonest reason a car will not start. It does not turn a starter motor, it wakes the system — and when it is weak nothing starts at all, although the large battery is full. A car that stands for long periods gets through them faster.

Common questions

Does a full hybrid need charging?
No. It charges itself — under deceleration and, when needed, from the engine. There is no socket, no cable and no charging card, and that is precisely its argument against a plug-in: it works without a parking space with power. The price is a small battery and therefore an electric-only range that covers pulling away and crawling traffic and nothing beyond that.
Is a hybrid worth it at low mileage too?
More so than a diesel, and for a clear reason: the saving hangs on braking events rather than on distance, and people who drive little usually drive exactly the kind of route where a hybrid wins — short, urban, with many stops. The purchase premium still stands and still has to be earned back. So do not work with the consumption difference per hundred kilometres but with the difference per year at your actual mileage, and set that against the premium.
