This is the level with the widest choice on the whole used market, and therefore the one where comparing prices across borders pays off most. A well-kept compact or estate, five to eight years old, with modern safety equipment and sometimes a manufacturer's warranty still running, is realistic here. Buying at this level, do not look for the cheapest car but for the one with the best history at a comparable price.
What matters
- Look at the safety equipment: autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping and drowsiness warning are common from about this model year and are sometimes rated more favourably by insurers.
- Check whether the manufacturer's warranty still runs. With makes offering long warranties — five or seven years — a young used car at this level is often still covered, and the warranty transfers to you.
- This is where looking across the border pays off most: the same model with the same specification is valued differently across eleven markets. Factor in transport and registration before you compare.
- An estate usually costs only a little more than the saloon with the same engine but is more sought after at resale. If the size does not bother you, it is the more economical choice.
