Cars up to 20,000
At this level you generally buy a car that will run for several more years without major investment. Nearly-new cars, demonstrators and well-equipped compact SUVs dominate. The price difference between two apparently identical offers is almost always the specification — and that matters more at resale than mileage does.
What matters
- Specification that holds resale value: automatic gearbox, tow bar, factory navigation, heated seats, all-wheel drive in mountain regions. Specification that adds little: unusual paint colours and large wheels.
- On demonstrators, check the first registration date. Formally they are used cars, but they have had one keeper and often fewer than 10,000 kilometres — with the price advantage of a used car and the warranty of a new one.
- What is left of the warranty: a nearly-new car often still carries factory cover, and that runs from first registration, not from your purchase. How many months remain moves the fair price more than ten thousand kilometres either way.
- This is the level at which looking abroad pays soonest. The price gap is wide enough to carry the import — unlike on a five-thousand car, where import charges and the inspection eat the advantage.
