What matters
- Prefer the well-kept volume model over rare specification. Parts for a Golf, Corsa or Clio cost a fraction of what an exotic import demands, and every garage knows the car.
- Two previous owners beat six. Frequent changes of keeper point to a car that has disappointed several people — the number is in the registration document.
- Look especially closely at automatic gearboxes at this price: jerking when pulling away or delayed shifts announce a repair costing half the purchase price.
- A car with 150,000 kilometres and a complete service book is usually the better bet than one with 90,000 and no record. Kilometres can be planned for; an unknown history cannot.
