Cars with automatic transmission
Automatic does not mean one thing, and the difference decides the repair bill. Torque converters are considered robust, dual-clutch gearboxes shift faster and are more sensitive, continuously variable transmissions are comfortable and expensive when they fail. On a used car the test drive matters more here than with any manual: nearly every gearbox fault announces itself while driving.
What matters
- Watch for jerking when pulling away and hesitation when shifting. On a dual-clutch gearbox both are a warning sign, not a character trait.
- Ask about the last gearbox oil change. Many makers call the fill lifetime; garages recommend changing it anyway, and evidence of one is a good sign.
- An automatic is more sought after at resale, particularly in Switzerland. The premium you pay when buying usually comes back when you sell.
