This is where young used cars begin: three to five years old, often one owner, with a warranty and a complete history. The first usable electric cars sit at this level too. The biggest mistake here is forgetting new-car discounts — check what the same model costs new with a discount before settling on a two-year-old one.
What matters
- Compare against the list price less the usual discounts. On some models a nearly-new car sits so close to a discounted new one that the full warranty and free choice of colour are worth the difference.
- On a used electric car the state of the battery is the single most important factor in value. Ask to see the battery report and check whether the battery warranty still runs — it usually lasts longer than the vehicle warranty.
- Ex-company and ex-lease cars are common at this level. They often have high motorway mileage but unbroken servicing at a franchised garage — usually the better combination than low mileage with no record.
