Cheap cars
Cheap is not always cheap. A low price comes from high mileage, high age, unpopular specification or a fault — and only the first three are fine for you. The skill lies in telling them apart before you pay: high kilometres with unbroken servicing is a discount; an unclear history is a risk premium you are taking on.
What matters
- An unpopular colour or plain specification lowers the price without anything being technically missing. That is the most honest way to buy cheaply — and you lose little at resale because you bought cheaply yourself.
- An offer well below the market has a reason. Before celebrating, ask: accident damage, an inspection due, foreign paperwork, a missing key.
- Compare across the border before you settle on price. The same model is valued differently across eleven markets — the effort of bringing it home is manageable if the gap is big enough.
