Estates with lots of space
On an estate the litre figure is the least meaningful number in the whole data sheet. What counts are three other measurements: the length of the load floor with the seats folded, the height of the load lip, and the width between the wheel arches. A car with a flat floor and a low lip takes more in practice than one with more litres on paper and a step behind the rear bench.
What matters
- Load volume with the seats folded is the more useful figure than with them upright — that is what an estate is for.
- Check the width between the wheel arches if you carry pallets or wide boxes. It differs considerably between two equally sized estates.
- On cars that are often loaded, look at the rear suspension: a sagging tail or worn dampers point to sustained heavy loads.
