Economical cars
Economical is not a type of car but the outcome of a calculation — and in that calculation consumption comes only third. What decides it is your annual kilometres, then the purchase price, and only then the consumption figure. At 8,000 kilometres a year a small petrol car is almost always cheaper than a more frugal diesel whose premium never pays back over that distance.
What matters
- Calculate with your actual mileage. The rule of thumb: a diesel usually pays off only from around 20,000 kilometres a year, whereas a full hybrid pays off precisely in town at low mileage.
- The factory figure is a comparison value, not a promise. Allow a margin in real use; on plug-in hybrids that are not charged regularly, real consumption is well above the stated figure.
- Do not forget the fixed costs. An economical car in a high insurance group can cost more than a thirstier one in a low group — fuel is rarely the biggest item.
