The biggest cost at this level is no longer repair but depreciation — and it differs considerably between two equally priced cars. A model in steady demand costs you noticeably less over three years than one that is hard to sell on.
What matters
- Think in depreciation, not purchase price. Two cars at 28,000 can differ by several thousand in residual value after three years — the sought-after engine and specification decide it.
- On cars with air suspension, rear-wheel steering or adaptive damping: these systems are comfortable and expensive as they age. Find out what they cost to repair before you buy, not after.
- Electric cars at this level usually have enough range for everyday use. Check the charging power, not only the range — a car that charges slowly is useless on long journeys, however big the battery.
