City cars
In town the winner is not the most economical car but the shortest one. Every half metre less noticeably increases the number of parking spaces you can use. The second point is the drivetrain: short trips are the hardest work for a combustion engine because it rarely warms up — which is exactly where an electric car or a full hybrid shows its advantage.
What matters
- Measure the length, not the class. Under four metres a noticeably larger number of parking spaces opens up, and in many city centres the bays are tight.
- A diesel used purely in town is the worst combination: the particulate filter never regenerates, and expensive repairs follow. Petrol, hybrid or electric are clearly better here.
- Parking sensors and a reversing camera are not luxuries in town but the difference between having and not having parking damage. On a used car they add hardly anything to the price.
