Cars with a tow bar
A factory-fitted tow bar is one of the few options that pays for itself almost fully at resale. More important than its presence, though, is what the car may actually tow: the braked towing capacity is in the registration document and differs considerably between two apparently identical models — it depends on the engine and gearbox, not the body.
What matters
- Check the braked towing capacity in the registration document, not the brochure. Two engines in the same model often differ by more than 500 kilograms.
- Nose weight is often the real limit — especially with a bike rack on the ball. Three e-bikes exceed the permitted nose weight of many compact cars.
- Detachable or swivelling is far more pleasant day to day than fixed, because otherwise the ball is in the way when parking — and in several countries it must not obscure the number plate anyway.
- Retrofitting is possible but, with the wiring kit and registration, usually costs more than the premium on a car that has one from the factory.
