Importing a car into Czechia
From an EU state, bringing a car into Czechia is informal — no customs, no import VAT, no levy on the vehicle's value. What remains is three appointments in a fixed order and one item that turns solely on the emission class.

Where the car comes from decides the effort
From an EU state
From an EU member state there is neither a customs declaration nor import VAT, as long as the car is used. If it stays under the threshold for first registration or mileage it counts as new for tax — then VAT is declared in Czechia, whatever was in the price in the country of sale.
From a third country
From Switzerland or Liechtenstein it is a genuine import: declared to the customs administration, duty on the customs value, import VAT on customs value plus duty. Type approval is usually added to the question — a car without European approval needs a report from an appointed test house, and that, not the duty, is the expensive part.
The process, in order
The order is not arbitrary. Pull a step forward and you usually end up repeating it.
01Before buying: establish the emission class
The emission class is in the vehicle papers or in the certificate of conformity. It decides whether the recycling contribution applies and at what level — on an older car that is the largest single item of the whole exercise, and the figure most often missing from the advert.
02Approval of technical fitness
An individually imported car needs its technical fitness approved before registration. With a European certificate of conformity that is an application and a data entry; without one, a report from an appointed test house takes its place, with its own appointment and its own wait.

03Have the sworn translation made
The foreign registration document and the purchase contract must be translated by a court-appointed translator in Czechia. The translation is bound to the original and sealed; a loose file does not meet the form.
Handled by: Soudní tlumočník (court translator)
04Technical inspection and emissions test
Before registration the car is presented at a testing station. The emissions measurement is a separate part of the test; at some stations it happens in the same hall, at others at a separate bay — and then it is two appointments rather than one.

05Take out third-party cover
Compulsory insurance must be in force at registration; it is proved with the green card or the insurer's confirmation. Without it the application is not processed, however complete the rest may be.
06Register
With the approval, the translation, the inspection report, proof of insurance and proof of the recycling contribution, the car is entered in the vehicle register. The technical certificate, the registration certificate and the plates are issued.

What gets added
Without amounts, and deliberately so: official rates change, and a stale figure is worse than none. What is here is the basis of assessment — enough to calculate with, once the current rate is known.
- End-of-life vehicle contribution
- Assessed on: Solely the car's emission class at first registration in Czechia — not its value, not its age, not its engine capacity. The older the class, the higher the contribution; from a class named in the statute upwards it does not apply.
- Does not apply: Does not apply from the emission class named in the statute upwards, nor to purely electric vehicles.
- Approval of technical fitness
- Assessed on: An administrative fee for the application where a certificate of conformity exists; without one, a report from an appointed test house costing a multiple of it.
- Technical inspection and emissions test
- Assessed on: The station's tariff by vehicle and drivetrain type; the emissions measurement is charged separately.
- Sworn translation
- Assessed on: By length for each document; the court-appointed translator's tariff.
- Registration and plates
- Assessed on: An administrative fee for the entry plus the plates themselves; personalised plates cost extra.
- Customs duty, import VAT and VAT
- Assessed on: From a third country, duty on the customs value and import VAT on customs value plus duty; within the EU, VAT only, and only for a car that counts as new for tax.
- Does not apply: Does not arise at all for a used car from an EU state.
The papers
Miss one of these and the appointment is wasted.
- The original foreign registration document, complete with all its parts.
- Certificate of conformity (COC), or the report of an appointed test house.
- Purchase contract or invoice, with a sworn translation.
- The technická kontrola report including the emissions measurement.
- Proof of compulsory insurance — green card or the insurer's confirmation.
- ID and proof of residence or of a registered seat in Czechia.
Where the sum tips
- The old diesel. The end-of-life contribution is assessed solely on the emission class. On a cheaply bought car of an older class it is the largest item of the whole exercise — and it appears in no advert, because it is no concern of the seller's.
- The wrong counter. Approval of technical fitness comes before registration, even though both happen in the same office. Start with the registration application and you will be back a second time.
- The unbound translation. What counts is the work of a court-appointed translator in Czechia, bound to the original and sealed. A file by email does not meet the form, however correct its content.
- The separate emissions test. At smaller stations it sits at a different bay or even a different site. Book one appointment and you end the day with half an inspection.
How long it takes
As an order of magnitude: one to three weeks from transfer with a certificate of conformity and complete papers, with translation and inspection running in parallel. Without one, with a test house report, rather six to twelve weeks.
The technical inspection
Technická kontrola (STK) mit emisní měření
The recurring technical inspection; the emissions measurement belongs to it but is run as a separate part and charged separately. Before an imported car is first registered it is due however recent the foreign test may be.
Common questions
Does Czechia levy a registration tax on the vehicle's value?
No. There is no levy assessed on the vehicle's value or its CO₂ output. The one substantial item attached to the car is the end-of-life contribution, and that turns solely on the emission class. Which is exactly why Czechia is cheap for young cars and less so for old ones.
Is a German or Austrian roadworthiness test recognised?
Not for the first registration of an imported car. The technická kontrola is due before the entry, however long the foreign test still has to run — it also establishes that car and papers match.
Do I need to be resident in Czechia?
The entry attaches to a domestic residence or registered seat. Foreign keepers prove it with a residence permit or the company's commercial register extract; without that connection there is no entry.
What if there is no certificate of conformity?
Then a report from an appointed test house takes its place. It is a separate procedure with its own appointment, and it costs a multiple of the administrative fee. On an older, cheap car it regularly exceeds the price advantage — which is why the question belongs before the purchase, not after.
This overview is not a substitute for information from the competent authority. Rates, fees and deadlines change; the office that registers the car is always the binding source.
