Engine oil: which figure on the papers actually counts

The registration document does not say which oil belongs in the engine. It does carry the details that answer the question — and the three blocks of text on the bottle are not worth the same.

What the papers say — and what they do not

The common assumption that the oil grade is in the registration papers is wrong. What is in them is the vehicle identification number, the type approval, displacement, power and, depending on where the document was issued, an engine code or a type key. The oil specification lives in the owner’s manual and the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule.

That is not an omission but a division of labour. The specification can change within one model line — a revised engine variant, a different aftertreatment level, a newer approval from the maker — and a document created at registration would not follow those changes. Which is why the vehicle identification number is the usable key: in any manufacturer system it leads to exactly the build that is in front of you.

In practice: take the engine code or chassis number from the papers, use it in the manufacturer’s documentation or ask a workshop, and have the specification named in plain text. Choosing oil by displacement and model year is the method by which most of the wrong containers get bought.

Viscosity describes flow, not quality

“5W-30” is a classification on a standardised scale, not a statement about quality. The number before the W describes cold behaviour: the smaller it is, the longer the oil stays pumpable as temperature falls, and the sooner a film reaches the most distant parts of the engine after a start. The second number describes viscosity at high operating temperature.

A common misunderstanding belongs here: a multigrade oil does not get thicker when hot. Every oil thins as it warms. A multigrade is one whose viscosity falls less steeply than a straight grade’s would — so it behaves like a thin oil when cold and like a thicker one when hot. That is achieved with polymers that change shape with temperature.

Why the grade is not a free choice: bearing clearances, gallery cross-sections and the oil pump’s delivery are all calculated around a viscosity band. Too thick an oil takes longer to reach the cylinder head when cold and costs friction; too thin an oil builds too weak a film in the bearings under load. Neither effect is audible before it has accumulated.

The performance classes

The second line on the container names classes such as ACEA in Europe or API in North America. They stand for tests passed: oxidation stability, deposits on pistons and valve train, wear protection, compatibility with seals, tendency to foam. The letter assigns the family, the number after it the edition of the test procedure.

For a car with exhaust aftertreatment one of those families matters especially: the one with limited ash content and limited phosphorus and sulphur. Those substances come from the additives, where they do a job — and they are also what ends up in the particulate filter and on the catalyst surface.

A performance class is a minimum requirement, not a substitute for an approval. An oil can carry a high class and still not be intended for a particular engine — the class tests and the manufacturer’s tests do not measure the same things.

What you do not need is additives off the shelf. A finished oil is a balanced package of base oil and additives tested as a whole; an extra dose shifts that balance in a direction none of those tests covered. Where an engine has a problem, the cause fixes it, not the bottle.

The manufacturer approval is the binding one

Many vehicle makers test oils against their own procedures and list the ones that pass under a number. Where that number appears in the maintenance schedule, it is the figure that counts — not the viscosity and not the performance class, since the approval already contains both. If you have the approval, you do not need to compare the rest.

Two different phrasings appear on containers, and the difference matters. “Approved to” means the vehicle maker lists this product. “Meets” or “corresponds to the requirements of” is the oil maker’s statement about its own product. It may well be accurate — but it has not been tested and listed.

In daily life that has a consequence beyond the engineering. If an engine fails within a warranty or an extended warranty, the question of which oil went in is one of the first asked. An invoice naming the approval answers it. An invoice that says only “oil change” does not.

Ash, filters and why the class is not a detail

What eventually blocks a particulate filter is not soot — soot burns off during regeneration. It is ash, and part of it comes from the metal-bearing additives in the engine oil, small amounts of which are burned along with the fuel. An oil high in ash therefore fills the filter faster with nothing at all being broken.

The same applies to the catalytic converter in another form: phosphorus and sulphur compounds settle on the active surface and reduce its effect. That too is not sudden damage but gradually worsening emissions control, which eventually shows up in a measurement and is then rarely attributed to the oil.

Which is why, on a car with a filter, the class is not a recommendation but a condition. An expensive oil from the wrong family does more harm than a plain one from the right family, and the harm shows up years later on a component nobody connects with the purchase of oil.

What else in the engine depends on the oil

In a modern engine the oil is not only a lubricant but a working fluid. Camshaft phasers are rotated through oil galleries, chain tensioners are pressurised by oil, hydraulic lash adjusters are filled by it. A variable oil pump sets its pressure from a map and assumes a particular viscosity while doing so.

A set of symptoms follows that people rarely trace back to the oil. A rattle in the first seconds after a start can be a tensioner that has bled down. A clatter from the valve train that fades after a minute is lash adjusters filling up. A camshaft timing fault can come from a dirty control valve, and dirt comes from oil left in too long.

On engines with a wet timing belt one more dependency arrives: the belt is designed around a specific oil specification. Oil that deviates or has been left in too long attacks its material, and what comes off collects on the oil pump pickup screen. On this design the oil question is the belt question, and it belongs before the purchase rather than after it.

The interval: fixed or variable

There are two systems. With a fixed interval the manufacturer names a distance and a period; whichever comes first applies. With a variable one a control unit computes a remaining value from running hours, the share of cold starts, engine speeds and temperatures, and asks for a change when it runs out. Which system applies to a given car, and with what figures, is in the maintenance schedule.

The variable system assumes two things: an oil approved for long intervals, and a use profile that matches the calculation. Anyone driving mostly short distances should know why it matters: with a cold engine, unburnt fuel passes the cylinder wall into the oil and dilutes it, and water from combustion condenses instead of evaporating. Both degrade the oil faster than any distance figure reflects.

For a used purchase that is a concrete question to put to the paperwork: on a car used almost entirely for short trips, was the long interval used anyway? That is not proof of damage. It is the reason to look harder at the valve train, the turbocharger and the state of the oil on this particular car.

What the dipstick tells you

You measure on level ground and to the manufacturer’s instruction — on most engines cold, or some minutes after switching off so the oil has drained back. Cars with an electronic level display and no dipstick have their own routine in the menu, which takes a while and is run stationary.

Colour says less than it is credited with. Diesel oil goes dark quickly, and that is the additives doing their job: they hold soot in suspension so it does not settle. Other things are informative — a level well above the mark together with a smell of fuel points to dilution; a level that drops noticeably between changes points to consumption.

Oil consumption in itself is not a defect; every engine uses some, and the manufacturer names a limit. What is telling is the trend: consumption rising over time, together with blue smoke on load after a long overrun. A beige emulsion only under the filler cap is usually condensation on a short-trip car in winter. The same emulsion on the dipstick and in the oil is something else.

Buying used: what the invoice has to say

A service book full of stamps proves somebody was there. The invoice proves what was done, and only the invoice is any use as information about the oil. If you cannot get the invoices, you cannot answer the question that matters most: was the engine run on what it was built for?

There is one case for deliberately deviating: you are away from home, the level is low, and the shelf does not hold the approval you need. Topping up with an oil of the same viscosity grade and a suitable class then beats driving on short of oil, and the next change may come early. It is no permanent answer, and on a car with a filter the ash class applies to the top-up container too.

And what does that mean for the price? A car with a complete run of oil invoices naming the approval is not automatically worth more, but it is the car for which you need less set aside for the unknown. Where the paperwork is missing, an oil service with a filter right at the start is an item — small against what it protects, and quotable over the phone.

  • The approval or specification named in plain text, not just “engine oil” followed by a quantity.
  • The oil filter as its own line. An oil change without a filter change is not one.
  • Date and mileage at each change, so the interval actually run can be worked out.
  • On an engine with a wet belt, the same information but carrying twice the weight.
  • Top-up quantities between changes, if the previous owner noted them — they show how consumption developed.
