Spotting a repaired accident car: the traces that stay

Almost every car past ten years old has lost some metal along the way, and most of it is irrelevant. Only one question matters: was load-bearing structure deformed — and if it was, how was it straightened?

What “accident car” actually means

The term is not a technical category but a negotiating word. It covers a resprayed car-park scrape as readily as a car that has been on a straightening bench. For safety and for value those are two different things, and anyone who fails to separate them either overpays for a repaired wing or underestimates a straightened body shell.

The dividing line is the load-bearing structure. What is bolted on can be replaced without anything being different afterwards. What has been welded, straightened or pulled changes the way the car absorbs energy in the next impact — and whether it still does so the way it was engineered to.

Legally, a lot hangs on what the seller says. If “no accident damage” is expressly stated, that is a warranted property and not an advertising phrase; the warranty exclusion in a private contract does not cover a false assurance. So ask the question once, clearly, and put the answer in the contract.

  • Load-bearing and therefore sensitive: chassis rails, strut towers, bulkhead, floor pan, A-, B- and C-pillars, roof frame, inner wheel arches.
  • Bolted on and therefore usually harmless: front wings, doors, bonnet, tailgate, bumpers, and on many designs the front slam panel.
  • In between: rear quarter panel and sill. Both are welded, both do get replaced, and both say something about the force of the impact.

Paint tells you about the repair, not the crash

A paint thickness gauge is one of the few tools that genuinely pays for itself when buying a car privately. It measures how thick the paint sits on the metal — magnetic induction on steel, eddy current on aluminium. A gauge that handles both costs less than a single hour at a paint shop and fits in a jacket pocket.

What matters is not the absolute figure but the spread. From the factory every panel on a car sits in a narrow band; the readings differ only slightly from panel to panel. Where one panel is clearly out of line, it has been resprayed. Where a reading is several times the rest, there is filler underneath, in a thickness that no longer counts as touching up.

Measure systematically rather than by spot check: three or four points per panel, always including the roof and both sides. A car completely resprayed after hail shows a different pattern from one repaired on a single corner — in the first case every reading is evenly raised, in the second only one zone is. And a reading near zero usually means “plastic”, not “no paint”: bumpers and some wings are not steel.

Light, reflections, panel gaps

Stand at an angle to the car and look along the flank so that a straight edge is reflected in it — a building front, a lamppost, the edge of a hall. The reflection reveals ripples in the panel that stay invisible head-on. Do the same from the rear, then on the other side. It takes two minutes and finds more than half an hour of staring from a metre away.

Panel gaps leave the factory even and symmetrical left to right. So always compare in pairs: bonnet against both wings, tailgate against both quarter panels, front door gap against rear door gap. A gap that narrows along its length is a clearer sign than one that is slightly wide everywhere — the first means distorted, the second is often just production tolerance.

On colour: metallic and pearl finishes rarely match exactly across a panel boundary. In daylight, look across the edge between wing and door, and between door and quarter panel, from two angles. What disappears in direct sun shows up under an overcast sky and the other way round — so use both if you can.

Bolts, seam sealer, overspray

Body shells are sealed by machine at the factory. The sealer bead in the door shuts, in the engine bay and under the boot floor is an even line with a consistent texture. Hand-applied seam sealer looks like cake icing: uneven, smoothed with a finger, often wider than it needs to be, and it covers exactly the spot welds you would otherwise see.

Bolt heads tell the shortest story. From the factory the paint lies undisturbed over wing bolts, bonnet hinges, door hinges and bumper carriers. Where a spanner has been on a bolt, the paint at the edge of the head is broken or the tool has left a bright edge. That does not prove an accident — but it proves the part was off, and there is a limited list of reasons for that.

Overspray is the third clue and the easiest to find. Look at the door seals, in the door shuts, at the plastic parts in the wheel arch, at brake lines and at the underbody. A good paint shop masks carefully; someone working fast does not, and the fine mist of colour settles exactly where nobody looks.

Boot, wheel arch, underbody

Lift the boot floor. The spare wheel well is the rear crumple zone and the cheapest place for rear-end damage to show: ripples in the metal, fresh paint in a well that is otherwise factory grey, sealer that does not match the rest. Finding nothing here rules out in five minutes what would otherwise need a lift.

At the front, the counterpart is a look under the bonnet at the strut towers and the bulkhead. Many cars have a bolted front slam panel — it is designed as a service part, and its replacement on its own says little. What counts is what sits behind it: the chassis rails. If they are free of creases, evenly painted and symmetrical, the impact stopped at the crumple zone.

Fresh underseal in one localised area is a warning sign, not a plus. Someone who re-coats a twelve-year-old car's underside before selling is not necessarily doing anything wrong — but they are hiding what could otherwise be judged. Ask why, and ask for the invoice.

What the electronics know

When the ignition is switched on, the airbag warning light must come on and go out after the self-test. Both belong. A light that never comes on at all is not a good sign but the opposite: it has been disabled, and whoever did that had a reason. This is one of the few points at which a viewing ends without further discussion.

On many cars the restraint control unit stores whether a deployment has occurred. A workshop with the right tester can read that out — which is why a pre-purchase diagnostic session pays even when everything looks right. A deployed airbag also leaves traces no forger removes cheaply: new belts, tool marks at the buckles and on the dashboard, a steering wheel whose airbag module sits differently from the trim around it.

Check the belts yourself: they must pull all the way out without snagging and retract on their own. At the end of the webbing you will find the maker and often a date. If a ten-year-old car has a belt on one side with a much newer date, that is worth a question.

Water is the other kind of damage

A car that has stood in water is cheap to make presentable and expensive to own. The damage does not show on the day of the viewing but over months: connectors corrode from the inside, sensors drop out intermittently, a fault cannot be reproduced and returns a fortnight later. That is the most expensive kind of fault, because you pay for the hours spent looking for it.

Search low and deep. Lift the carpet in the footwells, the rear ones too, and feel the insulation underneath. Look in the spare wheel well, under the rear seat, at the seat rails and at the bolts of the seat frames: rust on bolts that live inside the cabin does not otherwise happen. Pull a belt all the way out and look at the last stretch of webbing — a tide line stays visible there, because that part never saw sun.

An aggressively scented interior is a reason to smell harder, not a courtesy. Damp has its own earthy smell that comes back after half an hour with the doors shut. Get in, close the doors and wait.

Repaired is not the same as concealed

A properly repaired car at a price that reflects it can be the better buy than a supposedly untouched one at full price. The discount for a disclosed accident is usually larger than the actual residual risk — and it stays with the car, so factor it into the resale from the start. What you should ask for is the body shop's invoice, and where the shell was straightened, the measurement report.

Ask the question once, clearly, ideally on the phone before you drive out: has the car had accident damage, what kind, and is there an invoice? A calm, specific answer is the best sign this appointment has to offer. An evasive one is also an answer.

When in doubt, an inspection at an independent workshop costs a fraction of the difference between a structurally sound car and one that is not. A seller who refuses it has thereby given you the answer you were after.

  • The answer and the findings do not match: the seller says no damage, the gauge says otherwise.
  • The airbag light does not come on at ignition, or does not go out.
  • The chassis number on the car does not match the one in the papers.
  • An inspection on a lift is refused, whatever the reason given.
