Selling your car abroad
The same model is valued differently in different European markets. Selling across the border can bring noticeably more for some cars — especially models that are rare in the destination country. The extra effort is manageable once you know the order of steps.
What to look at
Settle payment first. With a buyer you do not know the same rule applies as at home: credit in your account or cash at the bank, nothing in between.
Hand over the complete documents. Many countries require the certificate of conformity for registration — without it, registering becomes laborious.
Deregister the car in your own country and keep the confirmation. It is your proof that you no longer bear responsibility for it.
For the drive home the buyer needs export plates or a transporter. Agree beforehand who arranges it.
Selling to a business in another EU country brings its own VAT rules. If you sell commercially yourself, a quick word with your accountant pays off here.
Common questions
- Does one listing actually reach buyers abroad?
- Your listing is visible in all 29 markets and every viewer sees the price in their own currency. That is the precondition — whether it turns into a sale depends on the car and the price gap between markets.
