Buying a car in Switzerland

In Switzerland the periodic roadworthiness test is called the MFK. Buying from the EU means declaring the import at the border and paying the vehicle tax and import VAT — Switzerland has charged no customs duty on cars since 1 January 2024. For a car with EU type approval the effort stays manageable. The cantonal motor vehicle tax is a separate matter: each canton sets it, and it differs considerably between them.
