Wheel alignment and suspension
A misaligned axle does not cost comfort, it costs tyres: even a small toe deviation will scrub the shoulder off a tyre within a few thousand kilometres. The measurement itself is quick — what it reveals is often worn bushes and joints that nobody had noticed.
What it covers
- Measuring toe, camber and caster on both axles
- Checking tyre pressure, tyre condition and suspension bushes first — otherwise you measure the wear along with it
- Setting to the manufacturer's figures, with a printout before and after
- Checking the steering wheel position afterwards
When it is due
- One tyre is noticeably more worn on the inside or outside
- The steering wheel sits off-centre when driving straight
- The car pulls to one side on a level road
- After any suspension work, and after any hard kerb strike
Worth knowing
Ask for the printout from before and after the adjustment. It shows whether anything was actually out — and if a value sits outside the adjustment range, the problem is not the alignment but a bent component. Without the printout you cannot tell the two apart.
