Windscreen repair and replacement
A stone chip in a windscreen can be repaired while it is small, out of the driver's field of view, and has not yet started to crack. It usually cracks not while driving but on a temperature swing — frost overnight, heater in the morning. Put the appointment off for three weeks and you replace the screen instead of repairing it.
What it covers
- Assessing whether repair is still possible: size, position and age of the damage
- Repair by drawing resin into the chip under vacuum
- On replacement: bonding the screen and observing the specified cure time
- Transferring the rain sensor, camera and aerial connections
- Recalibrating the assistance camera after replacement
When it is urgent
- The chip lies in the driver's direct field of view
- A fine crack is already running from the impact point
- The damage reaches the edge of the screen
- Before the periodic test — damage in the field of view is a defect
Worth knowing
Important on newer cars: on many models the camera for lane-keeping and emergency braking sits behind the windscreen. After every replacement it has to be recalibrated, or the systems work from the wrong reference line. Ask about it explicitly when booking — replacement without calibration is cheaper and therefore common.
