Timing chain checks and replacement
A timing chain counts as maintenance-free, and usually that holds. It does stretch over its life, though, and the tensioner only compensates so far. Beyond that the valve timing drifts, the engine runs rough, and the fault memory logs a deviation between camshaft and crankshaft signals — which is the actual evidence, because a noise alone is not a diagnosis.

What tells you it is due
- A rattle for a second or two immediately after a cold start
- Rough idling and duller throttle response
- Engine warning light with a camshaft position entry
Worth knowing
The brief cold-start rattle is the best-known sign, but it is not proof: on some engines the tensioner rattles because oil pressure has to build after standing, and the chain is fine. Only a readout says which case you have — which is why diagnosis comes before the quote, not after it.
